Key Differences Between Grip and Overgrip in a Padel Racket
One of the most important aspects for any padel player, whether beginner or advanced, is the quality and type of grip on their racket. This is where the grip and overgrip come into play. While both serve to improve grip, they have fundamental differences in function, materials, thickness, and durability. In this article, we break down each one in detail, with examples and usage tips so you can choose the most suitable accessory, and we recommend standout products from our store to optimize your on-court experience.
What is the grip on a padel racket?
The grip is the original handle installed at the factory on the racket's shaft. Its main function is to provide a comfortable, secure, and stable hold, absorbing part of the vibrations and preventing the racket from slipping during play. The grip is usually thicker and more cushioned than an overgrip, made from durable materials like polymers and special foams.
In the Grips-Overgrips Padel section you will find a wide range of grips and accessories to personalize your racket. If you are looking for an innovative grip, the Grip Hesacore Bullpadel Gel Light Blue stands out for its ergonomic design that enhances vibration absorption and comfort.
What is an overgrip and what is its function?
The overgrip is a thin, elastic tape placed on top of the original grip. Its purpose is to improve feel, increase the handle's thickness to the player's liking, and provide an extra layer to absorb sweat. Overgrips are easy to replace and allow you to always keep your grip in optimal condition.
In our store, Grip-Overgrips de Tenis are also compatible with padel rackets, and there are specific models such as Overgrips Tecnifibre Players Pro Blanco 12 Unidades and Blister Dunlop 3 Overgrips Tour Pro Naranja Fluor, ideal for those seeking maximum absorption and durability.
When is it better to use only the grip or add an overgrip?
The choice between using just the grip or adding one or more overgrips depends on several factors: hand size, sweat level, and personal feel preferences. Some players prefer the original thickness and feel of the grip, while others want to customize the handle for more control or to avoid injury.
- Only grip: Ideal for those who find the handle comfortable and do not need extra thickness.
- Grip + overgrip: Recommended for those wishing to adjust thickness, improve sweat absorption, or change the feel. The overgrip also protects the original grip, extending its lifespan.
If you are looking for rackets with excellent ergonomics and premium materials, we suggest the Pala Head Speed Pro 2025 or the Pala Adidas Adipower Carbon Light 2025, which offer balance and comfort from the first use.
How to choose the most suitable grip or overgrip for your racket?
The choice of grip or overgrip depends on your needs and on-court sensations. Key aspects to consider:
- Material: Grips are usually made of more durable and cushioned materials, while overgrips prioritize sweat absorption and feel.
- Thickness: If you have large hands or seek more power, you can add more than one overgrip. For control and maneuverability, keep the handle thinner.
- Texture: Some models have rough, perforated, or smooth finishes to suit every player.
- Frequency of change: It is advisable to change the overgrip regularly (every few matches) to maintain hygiene and performance.
The ROYAL PADEL section features high-end rackets and accessories to complete your equipment. Also, the Grip Helix Pro Gris Blanco is an excellent choice if you want to renew the handle with cutting-edge materials.
How to correctly place a grip or overgrip on a padel racket?
Installing a grip or overgrip is simple, but requires accuracy to avoid wrinkles or poorly adjusted areas that could cause discomfort during play. Here are the basic steps:
- Remove the old grip or overgrip if worn out.
- Place the starting adhesive tape at the base of the handle.
- Wrap the grip or overgrip evenly, slightly overlapping each turn.
- Finish by securing the end with the tape usually provided.
Spending a few minutes on this process ensures optimal grip and longer accessory life. For those seeking a racket with great feel and control, the Pala Nox ML10 Pro Cup Rough Surface 2023 is an option to consider.
What are the most common mistakes when choosing and maintaining grip and overgrip?
One frequent mistake is not changing the overgrip regularly, which can cause loss of grip, blisters, and increased risk of injury. Another common mistake is choosing an inappropriate thickness: a handle that is too thick may reduce maneuverability, and one too thin may cause wrist discomfort.
To avoid these problems, frequently check the condition of your grip and overgrip and consult our store's catalogue for the best option. If you want to renew your racket and accessories, models like the Pala Black Crown Coyote Carbon 3k or the Pala StarVie Arkos 2026 offer innovation and quality for demanding players.
Advantages of caring for your grip
- Improves control and shot accuracy.
- Reduces risk of wrist and elbow injuries.
- Increases comfort during long matches.
- Allows racket customization to your needs.
In summary, both grip and overgrip are essential elements for maximizing performance and comfort on court. Choosing and maintaining these accessories in good condition will make a difference in your game.
