How to balance your racket after changing the grip

Readjust your padel racket balance after grip modification

The balance of the padel racket is one of the key factors for on-court performance. Changing the grip-whether because it is worn out, you want more thickness, or seek a different feel-can alter that racket balance you worked so hard to achieve. In this guide, we explain step by step how to adjust the balance of your racket after changing the grip, what materials and accessories to use, and how the best padel accessories brands offer professional solutions.

Why is balance so important after grip modification?

The balance of the racket determines whether it feels heavier at the head (high balance), more even (mid balance), or at the handle (low balance). When changing the grip, especially if it is thicker or heavier, the center of gravity moves toward the handle, modifying maneuverability, power, and control. This variation can be subtle but affects your game feel and injury prevention.

How does grip change affect your game?

Changing the grip is not just about handle comfort. A heavier or thicker grip, such as those offered by premium brands like Adidas or Bullpadel, can modify the racket's response on every shot. For example:

• Heavier grip: The racket feels more maneuverable but with less power on smashes.
• Lighter grip: The balance shifts towards the head, increasing power but making control harder.

That's why choosing the right grips and accessories is vital to maintain your style and game level.

How to check the racket balance after changing the grip?

To know if the balance has changed significantly, place the racket on an axis (it can be a thick pencil) and find the point where it stays horizontal. Compare it with the initial center of gravity (before changing the grip). If the difference is noticeable and does not convince you, you can:

• Add weight to the racket head (with lead tape made for padel).
• Reduce grip thickness or use lighter overgrips.
• Try accessories from Head or Siux, designed to customize weight and balance.

Which materials and brands to use to maintain balance?

The variety of padel accessories available today is enormous. Brands such as Asics, Nox, or Starvie offer grips and overgrips in different weights and thicknesses, as well as accessories to customize the balance. Some tips:

• Light overgrips: Ideal if you want to keep the balance towards the head.
• Padded grips: Improve comfort but alter balance more.
• Lead tape: Allows fine adjustment if the grip has shifted the balance too much.

Remember, the key is to try various combinations until you find the one that suits your game best.

When is it advisable to change the type of grip?

Each player has different feelings and specific needs. If you notice loss of control, power, or wrist discomfort after grip modification, you may need to reconsider the thickness or type of material. Brands such as DRY GRIP or ELITE GRIP offer non-slip and lightweight solutions to avoid these issues.

What tricks are there to adjust the balance if the new grip does not convince you?

If after changing the grip the racket feels "strange", you can apply these tricks:

• Place lead adhesive tape on the top of the racket to recover the original balance.
• Use a thinner grip if the new one is too heavy.
• Combine different types of overgrip to modulate weight and comfort.
