How often should I change the overgrip for optimal grip?

Why is it important to change the padel racket overgrip?

The overgrip is an essential element on your padel racket, as it ensures a safe, comfortable, and non-slip grip during play. Over time and use, the overgrip loses properties such as sweat absorption, grip, and proper texture, which can negatively affect your technique, shot power, and even increase the risk of injury. Therefore, knowing when and how to change the overgrip is key for any player seeking maximum performance and protection.

How often should I change the overgrip for optimal grip?

There is no universal rule, as the optimal frequency to change the overgrip depends on several factors: frequency of play, intensity, climate, level of sweating, and the quality of the overgrip itself. However, as a general guideline:

• Regular players (3 or more times a week): Change the overgrip every 7-10 hours of play, usually once or twice a week.
• Occasional players: Change the overgrip every 3-4 matches or when you notice a loss of grip or comfort.
• In hot climates or high sweating: You may need to renew it more frequently, even after each intense match.

Listen to your racket: if the overgrip loses color, becomes slippery, shows worn areas, or absorbs less sweat, it's time to change it.

Factors that accelerate overgrip wear

The use of proper technical clothing, such as garments from WILSON Padel Clothing, helps control hand sweat, but if you play in very hot courts or sweat a lot, you'll need to replace it more often.

What problems may arise if I don't change the overgrip in time?

An old or worn overgrip can cause:

• Loss of control and precision in shots.
• Blisters or discomfort in the hand.
• Greater risk of the racket slipping and causing injuries.
• Less vibration absorption, which can affect joint health.

How to correctly change the overgrip?

The process of changing the overgrip is simple, but you should follow a few basic steps for a professional result:

• Remove the used overgrip and clean the racket's base grip.
• Start wrapping the new overgrip from the base of the handle, slightly overlapping each turn.
• Apply even tension to avoid wrinkles or bumps.
• Secure the upper end with the included adhesive tape.

Remember, a poorly done change can cause hand discomfort and affect your game.
