How to choose the best base grip for your padel racket

Comprehensive guide to selecting the right padel base grip

The base grip is one of the most important elements when it comes to personalizing your padel playing experience. Although often overlooked, its role is key to achieving a comfortable hold, reducing vibrations, and maximizing control over the racket. In this article, we explain everything you need to know to choose the best base grip for your padel racket, considering your needs and preferences.

In the Padel Accessories catalogue, you can find a wide variety of grips and accessories from the best brands in the market to enhance your game.

Why is the base grip so important?

The base grip is the first layer that wraps around the racket handle. Its main function is to provide a comfortable and secure surface for holding the racket, allowing precise movements and preventing slipping. Additionally, a good grip helps absorb sweat and vibrations, preventing discomfort or injury and making it easier to adapt the racket to the player's hand.

What materials and technologies are used in base grips?

Base grips are made of different materials, each with specific properties:

• PU (polyurethane): A widely used synthetic material, offering a good balance between comfort and absorption.
• Rubber: Provides excellent cushioning and grip, ideal for those seeking maximum comfort.
• Technical materials: Some brands like Bullpadel, Head or Black Crown use technologies that enhance durability, breathability and control.

The choice depends on whether you prioritize sweat absorption, durability or feel.

How do thickness and texture of the base grip affect your game?

The thickness of the base grip determines the handle diameter. A thicker grip can help players with large hands or those who suffer from joint discomfort, while a thinner one offers greater control and wrist mobility. Texture also matters: rough grips increase hold, while smooth ones allow easier sliding.

How to know if the base grip is correct?

To check if the base grip is right, hold the racket as usual and see if there is a small space between the base of your fingers and your palm. If there is no space, the grip is too thick. If there is too much space, it is too thin.

When should you change your padel racket's base grip?

The base grip should be replaced when you notice it loses adherence, deforms or wears out. Frequency depends on intensity and type of use, but under normal conditions, it is recommended to replace it every 2-3 months. Keeping the grip in good condition is essential to prevent slipping and injuries.

Tips to extend the life of your grip

• Keep the racket in a padel bag to protect it from moisture.
• Do not leave the racket exposed to sun or excessive heat.
• Wash your hands before playing to reduce sweat and dirt build-up.

How to combine the base grip with overgrips?

Many players choose to place an overgrip on top of the base grip to further customize feel and thickness. The combination of both is key to finding the right balance between comfort, absorption and control.

Some brands like Head and Babolat offer packs of overgrips and base grips to make customization easier.

Advantages of choosing your base grip well

• Better hold and control on every shot.
• Prevention of wrist and elbow injuries.
• Greater durability for your racket and accessories.
• Full adaptation to your playing style.
