How to choose the right grip size in padel

The importance of grip thickness for your padel performance

Choosing the grip thickness on your padel racket is one of the most important decisions to optimize comfort, control, and injury prevention. Although often overlooked, the handle connects your hand to the racket and determines how you feel each shot. Whether you go for a thin, medium, or thick grip, this choice impacts both technique and the health of your wrist and forearm.

At TiendaPadelPoint you can find a wide range of padel rackets from leading brands such as Adidas, Bullpadel, or Head, all offering grip options tailored to your needs.

Why is grip thickness so relevant?

The thickness of the handle affects how you hold the racket and transmit force to the ball. An inadequate grip can lead to discomfort, reduced control, or even injuries such as tennis elbow. Customizing your grip is therefore essential for every player, from beginner to professional.

If you are looking for accessories to personalize your handle, check out our Padel Accessories section, where you will find grips and overgrips of various thicknesses and materials.

What is the difference between a thin, medium, and thick grip?

The ideal thickness depends on several personal and technical factors. The thin grip usually measures around 3.5 to 3.75 inches in circumference, the medium is about 4 to 4.25 inches, and the thick is over 4.5 inches.

Each type offers distinct advantages:

• Thin grip: Greater wrist mobility and easier to generate spin, ideal for technical players or those with small hands.
• Medium grip: The perfect balance for most, providing control and a good hold, recommended for most players.
• Thick grip: More stability and reduced vibration, especially useful for those with large hands or looking to avoid injuries.

How do you know which is right for you?

Try the racket's grip: place your hand on the handle and make sure that when you close your fingers, your thumb does not touch the rest of your hand. If there is excess space, the grip is too thick; if there is not enough, it is too thin. Adjusting the handle with an overgrip can help you personalize the thickness.

How does grip thickness affect control and power?

Control and power are directly related to how the grip feels:

• Thin grip: Greater wrist control and easier for spin shots, but may cause more vibration.
• Medium grip: Excellent balance between control and power, recommended for all playing styles.
• Thick grip: More power, greater vibration absorption, and injury protection, but may reduce maneuverability.

What do professionals and leading brands recommend?

Brands like Nox and Starvie offer models with different handle thicknesses and materials, allowing professional players to customize the grip according to their needs and sensations.

How does grip thickness help prevent injuries?

An inadequate grip can cause injuries such as tennis elbow, tendinitis, or wrist pain. A thin grip may lead you to grip the racket too tightly, increasing the chance of discomfort. In contrast, a thick grip helps distribute force more evenly, though if it is too thick, it may hinder natural movement.

Tips to avoid injuries

• Check your grip regularly and replace it when necessary.
• Customize the thickness with overgrips until you find the optimal feeling.
• Choose accessories from specialized brands such as Asics or Babolat, which offer ergonomic grips and advanced materials.
