Common mistakes when choosing a padel shot and how to fix them

Main mistakes when selecting a shot in padel

Choosing the right shot is one of the main keys to success in padel. However, both beginners and advanced players often make mistakes when deciding which shot to play in each game situation. Detecting and correcting these mistakes will help you improve your performance and enjoy the court much more. In this article, we review the most common mistakes, how to avoid them, and what technical and tactical aspects you should consider to make better decisions on each point.

Why shot selection is fundamental

Selecting the right shot depends not only on your technical ability but also on your analysis of the play and anticipation of your opponent's response. Having the right equipment is equally important: padel rackets with the ideal balance and padel balls of quality can make the difference in your shot execution.

What are the most frequent mistakes when hitting in padel?

One of the most common mistakes is not adapting the shot to the ball's position and the player's position on the court. For example, attempting a powerful smash when too far from the net or trying a bandeja without control of the point. This may be due to poor game reading or lack of confidence in safer shots. The solution is to analyze the development of the point, choose the shot with the highest probability of success, and not rush your decisions.

Technical mistakes versus tactical mistakes

A technical mistake can be choosing the right shot but executing it poorly (e.g., a backhand without proper support). A tactical mistake is selecting the wrong shot based on the situation (e.g., playing an aggressive volley when the opponent is far away). To fix both, it's essential to train both individual technique and game tactics.

How does equipment influence shot selection?

The equipment you use directly affects your reaction capacity and the quality of each shot. Choosing an unsuitable racket can limit you: for example, a racket that is too heavy can make it difficult to defend or get out of the back glass. The importance of grip and footwear

What signs indicate you have chosen the wrong shot?

If after executing a shot you find yourself out of position, your opponent easily counters you, or you lose control of the point, it probably wasn't the best option. Analyzing your own videos and matches, as well as receiving coach feedback, are effective methods to detect these mistakes and learn to correct them quickly.

The role of anticipation and opponent reading

Many shot selection mistakes arise from not correctly anticipating the opponent's play. Developing good game reading is as important as mastering technique. At TiendaPadelPoint, we recommend practicing real match situations and working on decision-making under pressure.

How to train to make better decisions on each shot?

Targeted training with specific decision-making exercises is key. Simulate points where you have to choose between different shots depending on the ball's position, speed, and height. Also, it's important to use comfortable, suitable padel clothing that allows you to move freely and react quickly.

The importance of confidence and mindset

Many players make mistakes due to excessive pressure or fear of failure. Working on a positive mindset and confidence during training and matches is essential to reduce the frequency of shot selection errors.
