Recommended turns when placing an overgrip in padel

How the number of overgrip turns affects your padel game

The overgrip is one of the fundamental padel accessories for any player, whether amateur or professional. Choosing the correct number of turns when placing the overgrip can make a difference in performance, comfort and, above all, in preventing injuries to the arm and wrist. But how many turns should you really take when putting an overgrip on your racket?

Understanding the function of the overgrip

The overgrip serves a dual purpose: it improves grip and absorbs sweat. This is especially important in racket sports like padel, where the handle must fit perfectly to the player's hand. Incorrect placement can lead to discomfort, decreased control and a sense of insecurity when hitting.

At TiendaPadelPoint you'll find a wide variety of specialised overgrip brands, both classic and next-generation, from brands such as Adidas, Babolat, Bullpadel, Head, Wilson and many more, so you can choose the one that best suits your needs.

How many turns are ideal when putting on the overgrip?

The ideal number of turns for a padel overgrip is usually between 1 and 1.5 full turns around the handle. The key is to cover the entire grip, from the base to the end, without excessive overlapping of the material. If you make too many turns or overlap the overgrip too much, the handle may become too thick, affecting feel and control.

On the other hand, if you take too few turns or leave spaces uncovered, you'll lose grip and sweat may affect your game. Most players prefer an overlap of between 10% and 25% of the overgrip's width on each turn, which allows you to completely cover the handle without making it too thick.

Why is it not advisable to take too many turns?

Taking many turns with the overgrip may seem like it will improve durability, but in reality you may lose the natural "feeling" of the racket. The handle gets bigger, which can cause discomfort and lack of control in technical or precision shots. In addition, excess weight at the grip can unbalance the racket.

How do you know if the thickness is right after placing the overgrip?

A simple way to check if the thickness is correct is to hold the racket and close your fist around the grip. If there is a small space between your fingertips and the palm of your hand, the thickness is correct. If your fingers dig into your palm, you may have taken too many turns or the overgrip is too overlapped.

Padel rackets from brands such as Siux or Nox usually have standard size handles, so a single overgrip well placed is usually enough. However, if you have large hands, you can add an extra turn, but always in moderation.

How often should you change the overgrip?

The frequency of change depends on the intensity of use and playing conditions. In general, it is recommended to change the overgrip every 5-10 matches, or sooner if you notice it has lost grip or absorption. What overgrip brands stand out in the market?

Leading brands in the current market include Adidas, Bullpadel, Babolat, Head, Wilson, Dunlop and Starvie. Each offers different thicknesses, textures and absorption, so it's a good idea to try several options.

What other accessories complement the overgrip?

Besides the overgrip, there are other essential accessories for your kit, such as padel shoes and racket bags, which help you protect your equipment and improve your performance.

How to correctly place the overgrip step by step?

Placing an overgrip is easy if you follow these steps:

• Remove the protective plastic from the overgrip.
• Start at the base of the handle and fix the end with the adhesive.
• Wrap the overgrip in a spiral, overlapping between 10% and 25% of its width.
• Do not make more than 1.5 full turns; the idea is to cover, not to thicken excessively.
• Fix the upper end with the adhesive tape usually included.

By following these tips, you will achieve a comfortable and secure grip, ready to perform at your best in your padel matches.
