Ideal overlap when applying overgrip to a padel racket

How to optimize grip with the right overgrip overlap

The overgrip is one of the essential padel accessories for any player, as it allows you to adjust the thickness and texture of the handle of padel rackets to your needs and preferences. However, a fundamental aspect often overlooked is the correct overlap when placing the overgrip. In this article, you'll learn how to achieve a professional overlap to enhance control, comfort, and durability of your grip.

Why is overgrip overlap so important?

The overlap refers to the amount of superposition you leave between each turn of the overgrip as you wrap it around the racket handle. Proper overlap affects thickness, adherence, sweat absorption, and the final feel in your hand. If the overlap is too much, the handle may become too thick and you lose sensitivity; if it's too little, the overgrip can move, tear prematurely, or leave areas uncovered.

What is the recommended overlap when applying the overgrip?

The general recommendation from professionals and specialized brands like Head, Adidas, or Bullpadel is to keep an overlap of about 3-5 millimeters between each turn of the overgrip. This is equivalent to covering about 20-30% of the width of the tape in each turn.

This overlap ensures:

• Uniformity in the thickness of the entire grip.
• Maximum adherence and durability of the overgrip.
• Comfort and prevention of blisters or discomfort.
• Sweat absorption and better control in intense shots.

Common mistakes when applying the overgrip

Some common mistakes are leaving excessive overlap (more than half the width) or too little (almost no overlap), which can negatively affect the playing experience. Also, wrapping the overgrip crooked or without even tension can cause wrinkles and discomfort in your hand.

How to properly apply the overgrip step by step?

Here's how to achieve the ideal overlap on your racket, guided by the best experts and specialized brands:

• Remove the overgrip packaging and locate the thinnest part (tip) of the tape.
• Stick the tip at the base of the handle, right where the cap begins.
• Start wrapping the overgrip upwards in a diagonal, maintaining a constant 3-5 mm overlap.
• Gently pull to tension the tape, without overstretching.
• Continue to the top of the handle and trim the excess if necessary.
• Secure the end with the included adhesive tape.

If you're left or right-handed, the winding direction may vary for greater comfort, but the recommended overlap is universal.

When should you change your padel racket's overgrip?

The time to replace the overgrip depends on frequency of use, sweat, and the type of overgrip. Generally, it is recommended to change it every 6-10 matches or as soon as you notice it has lost adherence, elasticity, or shows signs of wear. Using the correct overlap with each change is key to maintaining comfort and control in every match.

Remember that a dirty, frayed, or too-thin overgrip can cause injuries, blisters, and loss of performance in your game. If you're looking for new overgrips, visit our new arrivals category to find the latest trends and technologies.

Complementary accessories for your padel racket

In addition to the overgrip, there are other accessories like racket bags or padel shoes that can enhance your experience on the court. Always choose quality products and trust recognized brands to ensure the best performance.

What advantages does a good overgrip overlap offer?

A correct overlap not only improves grip, but also favors hygiene, minimizes vibrations, and extends the lifespan of both the overgrip and the original handle of the racket.

• Prevents sweat from penetrating the handle.
• Reduces fatigue and prevents injuries.
• Provides more confidence in powerful or precision shots.

If you want to get the most out of your racket, don't neglect the detail of the overlap and regularly consult TiendaPadelPoint recommendations to keep your equipment in top condition.

Conclusion and final tips

The key to a good overgrip lies in the overlap: not too much, not too little, but just right so that the grip perfectly suits your hand and playing style. Always choose quality products, change the overgrip when necessary, and stay up to date with padel accessory news to stay ahead in the sport.
