Common padel return errors and how to fix them

Key points to understand the return in padel

The return moment in padel is one of the most decisive in the game. A good return can change the dynamics of the point and give your pair an advantage. However, many players, both beginners and experienced, often make a series of recurring mistakes that hinder their progress. At TiendaPadelPoint, we want to offer you a clear guide on these mistakes and how to avoid them, helping you perfect your game and enjoy yourself more on the court.

The first step to correcting mistakes is to identify what you are doing wrong. The return is a defensive action but also an opportunity to move to the attack if executed correctly. Using the right padel accessories can help you feel more comfortable when returning.

Why is the return so important in padel?

Returning well means starting the point with an advantage or at least on equal terms. The serve is usually an offensive shot, so a good return is essential to neutralize that initiative. Moreover, mastering the return is key to breaking the opponent's serve and winning crucial games.

What are the most frequent technical errors when returning?

Many players fall into ineffective routines when facing the opponent's serve. Among the most common technical mistakes are:

• Poor positioning: Not positioning yourself correctly in relation to the baseline limits your reaction time and shot quality.
• Hitting too hard: Trying to return the ball with power instead of prioritizing placement leads to unforced errors.
• Rigid movements: Lack of flexibility in the legs and torso reduces the ability to adapt to different serves.
• Inappropriate racket use: Choosing a racket that doesn't suit your return style can affect your control. Specialist brands like Adidas or Bullpadel offer options tailored to different players.

How to choose the ideal racket to improve your return?

The racket is an extension of your arm and its choice directly influences the type of return you can make. If you seek control, round-shaped and low-balance rackets, like those from Black Crown, facilitate precision in the return. For experienced and aggressive players, models from Nox or Head offer a balance between power and control.

What is the best tactic to return different types of serves?

Adapting your return tactic according to the type of serve is essential to be competitive. Short serves require quick movement forward to attack the ball, while deep serves force you to move back and respond with a more defensive shot. Using quality balls, such as those available at Padel Balls, also influences your response.

Tactical errors you should avoid

• Not anticipating spin: Spin serves are common in padel. Observe the opponent's grip and movement to anticipate the bounce.
• Underusing the wall: Often, players avoid using the side or back wall in the return, losing options to return difficult balls.
• Lack of partner communication: Not coordinating with your partner creates doubts and leaves open spaces for the opponent.

How do accessories influence the quality of your return?

Using accessories such as specific padel shoes, technical clothing and racket bags can make a difference. Good grip on your shoes and breathable clothing facilitate mobility and concentration when returning.

Which brands stand out in accessories and return equipment?

Brands like Asics or MIZUNO are synonymous with quality shoes. For racket bags, Babolat and Dunlop offer practical and durable solutions.

How to create a specific training routine for the return?

Improvement in the return depends on consistency and proper training planning. Dedicate specific sessions to practicing returns against different types of serves, speeds, and spins to gain confidence.

• Work on positioning with lateral movement and reaction exercises.
• Practice with different rackets and balls to feel the differences and adapt to each real match situation.
