Definitive guide to perfect overgrip overlap in padel

The importance of proper overlap when applying an overgrip in padel

The overgrip is an essential accessory for any padel player, as it directly affects grip, comfort, and racket control. However, having the best overgrip is pointless if it isn't applied correctly, especially regarding overlap. In this guide, you'll discover step by step how to achieve the ideal overlap to maximize your overgrip's performance and lifespan, along with recommendations for top brands and products.

At TiendaPadelPoint you can find a wide range of padel accessories to fully complement your equipment.

Why is correct overlap essential?

Excessive overlap can make the grip too thick, making the racket harder to handle, while insufficient overlap causes the overgrip to shift and deteriorate quickly. The goal is to achieve a balanced overlap that ensures firmness, sweat absorption, and durability.

• Improves grip and prevents racket slippage.
• Increases comfort in prolonged play.
• Reduces the risk of wrist and forearm injuries.
• Extends the lifespan of both the overgrip and the original grip.

What is the ideal overlap width when applying an overgrip?

The recommended overlap is between 2 and 3 millimeters per turn. A simple visual trick is to cover about 10% to 15% of the overgrip's width on each pass. This guarantees a uniform surface without bumps or uncovered areas.

Practical tips for a perfect overlap

• Always start at the base of the handle (near the butt cap).
• Remove the overgrip's protective film only as you use it to avoid dirt or damage.
• Stretch the overgrip slightly, but don't force it, to avoid losing elasticity and absorption.
• Visually control the overlap and, if necessary, use your finger as a reference.
• At the end, cut off the excess diagonally for a professional finish.

How does the overgrip brand influence overlap and durability?

Not all overgrips are the same. Leading brands like Adidas, Bullpadel, Head, or Wilson offer different thicknesses, textures, and absorption levels. The tape's quality affects ease of application and overlap effectiveness. For instance, Nox overgrips stand out for their great adherence and comfort, ideal for those seeking maximum precision.

Which overgrip to choose according to your playing style?

• For players who sweat heavily, opt for models with high absorption.
• If you prefer a dry feel, there are micro-perforated options.
• For those seeking more thickness, there are special overgrips to increase handle diameter.

How to avoid common mistakes when applying the overgrip?

Many players, even experienced ones, make frequent mistakes when applying the overgrip:

• Not paying attention to the wrapping direction: always wrap in the same direction to avoid wrinkles.
• Too much or too little overlap: remember the 2-3 mm margin.
• Not securing the end properly: use the supplied adhesive tape.
• Not changing the overgrip often enough: if you notice loss of grip, it's time to renew it.

Overgrip maintenance routine

Always carry a spare overgrip in your padel bag and check the grip condition before each match.

What benefits does a well-applied overgrip bring to your game?

A properly applied overgrip with the right overlap elevates your game. It improves power transmission, reduces hand fatigue, and optimizes racket control. It also allows you to customize the handle thickness to your liking, especially useful if you switch between different padel rackets or share your racket with other players.
